With less than a second, I created a tiny ball of energy and threw it. The ball didn't do much but it knocked Manuel aside enough that Alex's attack didn't kill my trainer. Neither of their hearts beat while mine rocketed out of control in my chest.

"What in the world are you doing here?" I shrieked as Cutter's neighbors began entering the hallway to find out what had happened.

"I'm doing my job, that's what I'm doing," Manuel seethed. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm not here for the company. Either of them."

Alex growled and jumped to his feet, wrapping his hand around Manuel’s neck. “Don’t you know how to make a silent entrance? Grab the other one, Henley. We have to get out of here.”

As much as I hated to agree with him, Alex was right. We were drawing a crowd. He dragged Manuel with him from the apartment while I instructed Cutter he had two seconds to grab anything he needed. The werewolf took a few seconds longer than that, so I grabbed him and dragged him out as well, my irritation at his neighbors' whispers growing. Soon we’d be hearing sirens.

The driver’s seat of my truck was already occupied, so I tossed Alex the keys and helped Cutter into the back seat as the engine started. The sirens could already be heard up the street so I wasted no time climbing into the co-pilot’s chair as Alex hit the gas. He squealed my tires and I growled.

“We’re in a hurry,” he spat back. “I’ll buy you new tires later.”

Somehow, I doubted that.

Alex pushed the accelerator to the floor and we sped away from the apartment building at top speed before the lights of the police cars came into view. Only when we were miles from where we’d picked up Cutter did I turn and face the two men in the back seat. Cutter clung to the bag that held his computer. The duffel with his clothes rested beneath his feet. At least it was his bag on the floor and not mine. Manuel didn’t have anything, and my bag, along with Alex’s, sat between the two men. Both glared as I reciprocated.

“Manuel, why in the blazes were you at Cutter’s and Cutter, what in the blazes were you expecting delivered? What are you into?” I held up a hand as they both opened their mouths. “On the other hand, I don’t want to know. Just sit there and shut up so Alex doesn’t kill us all by driving off the road on purpose because he’s stuck with the three of us.” Cutter gulped as I turned and sat in my seat. Alex chuckled quietly as he drove. “Shut up.”

“I’m surprised your temper isn’t more renowned. It certainly comes out enough.” Alex slowed the truck to acceptable speeds and heaved a heavy breath. “What’s your plan, Henley?”

My gaze narrowed on him. “Why do you keep calling me that?”

“It’s your name, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, but I didn’t think you knew how to say it.
